Overview

SOMANET Com EtherCAT it is the smallest full-fledged EtherCAT controller board available. Different than other compact EtherCAT solutions, having Ethernet transceivers and magnetics on-board, Com EtherCAT immediately provides safe signaling over common 100BASE-TX distances using SFTP cables. SOMANET Com EtherCAT provides all the necessary hardware to integrate EtherCAT slave nodes on a network. Due to the master/slave communication model of EtherCAT, a master application is required, which usually runs on a PC.

The board’s main components are the SOMANET Core IF1 Connector, the Beckhoff’s ET1100 EtherCAT Slave Controller, a Flash memory and the hardware of each EtherCAT port. Each port combines an Ethernet transceiver, Ethernet magnetics and an Ethernet connector

Tip

Synapticon recommends the Linux-based IgH EtherCAT Master which source code is available and licensed under the GPLv2 license.

The connector type used is Hirose DF40 80-pin, with the header (DF40C-80DP-0.4V(51)) on the SOMANET Core module side and the receptacle (DF40HC(4.0)-80DS-0.4V(51)) on the IF1 side. The Process Data Interface is used to communicate with the SOMANET Core. Table 3 is showing the connector pin mapping between SOMANET Com EtherCAT and SOMANET Core modules.

The maximum component height at the top side of Com EtherCAT is 1.6 mm, with the exception of the EtherCAT Port Connectors, which exceeds this with a height of 3.4 mm. The maximum component height at the bottom side of Com EtherCAT is 2.45 mm, with the exception of the SOMANET Core Connector, which exceeds this with a height of 4.05 mm.
